During class this week, a majority of our time will be spent focusing on writing and understanding how important it is to captivate our audience. People are rarely going to want to read something if they find it boring!
We will discuss hooks and how they are designed to grasp and pull something--- and in this case it is the reader's attention. Hooks are so vital to writing because they arouse curiosity and interest in readers and give them that I can't put it down feeling.
This week I want you to read the following writing prompt and draft a catchy introductory paragraph. Think of all the various hooks we have discussed and choose one to best grasp the attention of your reader (quotation, anecdote, startling fact, analogy, question). Your paragraph must be at least 8 sentences long and contain a thesis statement or claim, which is the main idea that the rest of your essay will explain in more detail. Feel free to comment on each others' and advise or encourage your classmates!
BE ADVISED: YOU ARE NOT WRITING A WHOLE ESSAY. You are just responsible for 8 sentences that will HOOK the reader and state your thesis/claim.

Imagine that for one day you could trade places with anyone
you choose. The person could be real or imaginary, from the past or from the
present.
In a well-developed composition, identify the person you
would want to trade places with, explain why you would like to trade places
with this person, and describe how your day would be different as this person.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be famous? Well I have, so I think I would want to change places with Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber is my favorite singer so I would want to get to know him and see what it was like to be famous and have many fans. My day would be different because I couldnt walk around town or with my friends without having people notice me. I am not sure if I would really want to be famous because I might just want to be normal like everybody else. Also be able to do things a normal person would do without people running up to me and asking for my autograph. You might get tired of all those thing, but at first it would definetly be really fun. Thats why I would want to spend a day being someone famous.
ReplyDeleteGetting ready for the vma’s back stage and I’m singing my favorite song, “We are never getting back together.” It’s so incredible when I write like 10 break up songs and everyone likes them and there a hit in a week. That’ something Taylor Swift would say, that’s why I would love to switch places with Taylor Swift! Waking up in the morning and being a blond teenage that’s really famous and being top paid for under the age of 30.

Well I know someone who would be willing to make something for you at any time or any day. His name is Buddy Valastro, and is on the TV show Cake Boss. I would want to be him because he is the best cake baker I know and I love to bake. I wish I could be able to create 10 foot cakes, and make people happy everyday just like him. If I was Buddy I would spend my day baking crazy cakes for all different types of people, and always be able to talk to my family (it’s a family business). This is why I would be Buddy Valastro for a day.

I chose him because he is my absolute favorite male singer. My day would completely be different compared to how it normally goes in many ways. One way is that I would have a body guard following me around protecting me where ever I go and I would have more than a million fans to sing to at many different places. I would also be recording a bunch of different songs for my new album and chilling with the people that I care about. Finally, the last thing that I would do as Justin Bieber is drive in my awesome car that I got on my 18th birthday that was given to me by Ellen and my manager Scott. If I could switch places with anyone I'd switch places with Kristen Stewart. Why? So I could be in a movie where two good-looking guys fight over me. I mean isn't that any girls dream? Now that would be pretty different in it's own way. Plus the Twilight saga is one of my favorite movie series. Plus I love having my picture taken so I'd have a heck of a lot of fun with that. :)
ReplyDeleteHave you ever wondered what it would be like to be able to use magic? If I could to trade places with someone for one day, I would choose Harry Potter. It would be super fun to be able to all of the different things that are sometimes hard for us, by just saying silly words, and waving a stick. My day as a wizard would be very different from my normal day. At school I would learn about magical creatures, potions, crazy plants, and spells, instead of ELA, math, social studies and science. I would love to be Harry Potter for one day, because it would be very enjoyable, and fascinating.

Pete would get me anything I want. Pete and I would also be good friends so he doesn't hate his job and quit angrily. With the stuff I bought I'd send it all to the real me and when I switch back I have millions of dollars worth of awesome stuff. While I'm the billionaire I'd send the real me $1,000,000 and a gold bar too. I'd also take my whole family on a cruise around the world. A billionaire is the best person to trade places with.

Katty Pery is a fantastic artesr and kids look up to her. Thats why i would want to switch places with Katty Pery becauese she has an amazing life. I would change lives with wes welker even though he dropped a super bowl catch. He is an amazing player to make so many catches each game. This season not so much but I feel he is going to get it back and have another amazing season. That's why I would be wes welker.

In my life, I have always wanted to know what it would be like to see in only black, white, green, and sometimes orange. This is why I have decided to trade places with my dog, Skrappey Cornelious Doo Parisi. Walking on four legs sounds very interesting to me. Dogs also cannot talk. So I wonder what it would be like to listen to people talk, but not be able to express my feelings as well. Having a tail gets me wondering because I would like to know how dogs move them. I am also curious about what dog food tastes like. The claws on my hands and feet might feel interesting. I am not a big fan of cats myself, but I am curious to see what it is like to absolutely hate cats. All in all, if I could trade places with anybody in my life, it would be my dog, Skrappey.

ReplyDeleteIf I were the teacher I would grade the student a two. They used quotes from the story, and used 3 supporting details. However there thesis was unclear and they forgot to type some words or added some words. They also forgot to make a separate paragraph for each detail and didn’t include enough information. I would grade this student a two if I were the teacher.
