Becoming the Teacher

This week I want you to put yourself in the shoes of a teacher! You are going to evaluate a student's written response to the following MCAS question:

Based on the excerpt, explain why it took many years for hamburgers to become popular in the United States. Support your answer with important and specific information from the excerpt.

(The excerpt was handed out on Monday: "The Pioneers" by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson.)

Think about what we have discussed in class, and utilize the rubric below to help evaluate the student's response. You must state whether the student should receive a 1, 2, 3, or 4 and explain why. Your evaluation must be at least 5 sentences long. You may respond to another classmate's post and tell whether or not you agree with their scoring and why or why not.
Your post is due no later than Friday at 5 pm.

  1. If I were a teacher, and I had to grade this paragraph I would give the student a 2. There were a few spelling mistakes, and they didnt have a complete conclusion sentence. I thought it was good because they included a quote from the story, and had three supporting details. All though, the supporting deatials didnt give enough infromation. Thats why overall I gave this student a 2.

  2. If I were a teacher I would give them a 2 on this paragraph. One reason why I gave them a 2 is because they did not have a clear thesis or explain what they were answering. Second, they had many spelling errors and very messy hand writing, so you could barely understand there point. This person had many grammar mistakes that could have been avoided too. Though they did have 3 details from the story and stated were they found the information so I decided to score them with a 2.

  3. If I were a teacher I would give this person a 2 on this paragraph. First, they do not have a good thesisbecause the first scentence is not clear. Next, they do not have good details, but they did have details. They supported 1 of their details, not all of them. Lastly, they didnt proof read any of there work.

  4. If I were a teacher and had to grade this open response I would give this student a 1. A reason is that this particular student did not have a clear thesis statement. For instance, a thesis statement is supposed to have the title and author of the passage. Clearly, this student didn’t include the title or the author of the passage. Secondly, they could’ve had some explanations to support their details. Lastly, the student didn’t proofread their response. There were some mistakes on spelling and grammar. Therefore, I gave this student’s open response a 1.

  5. If I were a teacher and I had to grade this open response, I would give it a two. I would give it a two because it had a few spelling errors. It also didnt make a lot of sense in the beginning. The student's conclusion sentence didn't even sound finished because he didn't flip the topic sentence around. He or she just gave a fact. Their handwriting was also very hard to read. For example, when he wrote the word "is" I thought it was a colin mark. The student's thesis statement wasn't there. I am scoring this person a two because they did include a quote and a pretty well thought out explanation. Therefore, if I were a teacher, I would score this student's open response a two.

  6. If I were a teacher and I had to grade this paragraph,I would give it a two.First,I would give it a two because it does not give a clear thesis statement.Second,I would give it a two because it has spelling mistakes.Third,I would give it a two because it is very messy and sometimes hard to read.Lastly,I would give it a two because the first sentence is not clear enough to understand. These reasons show why I gave this person a final score of two.

  7. If I was the teacher grading this open response question I'd give it a 2 because there were a bunch of errors in the thesis statement. First, there were some spelling mistakes in the paragraph. Second, there are no commas after the transition words, but at least he or she used them. Third, the person who wrote this didn't have a clear conclusion, it was more of a fact. The thesis wasn't clear either. The only reason this response wasn't a 1 is because he or she included a quote from the story. Overall, I decided to grade this response a 2.

  8. If I were a teacher grading this open response i would give this person a 2 because he/she didn't indent. Plus he/she didn't have the right facts, when they say "... paragraph 5 states the hamburger's reputation wasn't helped when murderers started using ground beef to kill people..." But in paragraph 5 it just talks about how the meet was thought of as dirty and unhealthy. Not until paragraph 6 does it start to talk about the murderers. Overall I think this person clearly deserves a 2.

  9. If I were a teacher I would give them a 2. They only had 1 piece of evidence that that supporting detail was good. They also did not have complete sentence like Juliana said. There was no hook and the thesis wasn't clear to me. Another reason why I would give them a 2 is because it's really was hard to follow along with. That's why the person who wrote this would get a 2 if I was a teacher.

  10. If i were the teacher and had to grade this open responce I would give this student a 2 because she/he didn't say the first and second sentence correctly. The student also didnt indent. In addition the student did not proof read. Overall i think this student diserves a 2 as her/his grade.

  11. I would give the person a 2 because he only gave a partial response. He didn't have a thesis. They also didn't have an opening introduction. They didn't include how burgers became popular again but just wrote about why they became less popular. They only included where to find one of their quotes.

  12. In my mind the student's open response is a 2, and that is what I would grade it if I were a teacher. Firstly, I would grade it a 2, and not higher, because there is no thesis statement, and the first sentence does not make any sense. Also the student did not put a comma after lastly, and they spelled thought wrong. Furthermore, the student didn't give much evidence from the story to support their details. Lastly, I would grade the student a 2, and no higher, because they did not write the paragraph neat at all, it was very messy. There are reasons why I would grade the paragraph a 2 instead of a 1, or 0 though. One of those reasons is that the student stated why it took many years for hamburgers to become popular, and he did answer the question, and was mostly clear. I believe that the student deserves a 2 on the open response.

  13. If I were in a teachers place of grading this open response I would give it a 2. I would grade this open response a 2 for multiple reasons... This person didn't really conclude their response. They did not use correct puncuation after a transition. The thesis wasn't clear (if there even was one). There was three supporting details but since there thesis wasn't clear it messed it up. They could have added a better explanation for the supporting details wich could have created at least three good paragraphs and a better score than what I think is a 2.

  14. If I was the teacher I would give this a 2. The thesis wan't clear, They did have some supporting details but they didn't really help the thesis. They had a couple of spelling mistakes, And it doesn't mention what story or anything, It just says "In paragraph 5 it states..." Also they didn't conclude the paragraph, Just used a third detail.

  15. If I were a teacher, I would grade this open response a 2 because the did not have a full conclusion also there were a couple of spelling errors. Other things are that they wrote very messy and they did not have a thesis statement. They included a quote which was good and had some good transition words but overall I would grade this a 2.

  16. I I was a teacher I would give this particular student a 2 because the thesis statement was not clear at all and the punctuation and grammar was the information was wrong and there were only two supporting details ... This is why if I were a teacher I would only rate this student a 2 because of the punctuation the grammar poor supporting details and wting information

  17. If I was to be a teacher I would give a 2 to the person who wrote this. First, the thesis was not clear at all.Next, the person who wrote this did not indent and they had some things that were spelt wrong. Lastly,I like that he had a quote in the paragraph. Clearly,They did not give enough imformation in the paragraph.
