"The Fall of the Hindenburg" is a nonfiction piece that we will be reading this week. Nonfiction (NOT FAKE!) deals with only real people, events or ideas and is narrated from the point of view, or perspective, of the author, who is a real person. It may reflect the historical context of the time period, including references to major social and cultural information. However, not all nonfiction accounts or stories are in written form. Some are recounted in discussions or on news programs.
Talk to any adult in your life (grandparent, mother, father, aunt, uncle, guardian, teacher, cousin... etc) and ask them about a major historical event they can recall in their life. Maybe they will give you insight into 9/11 or the JFK assassination.... or the first trip to the moon....or the Cuban Missile Crisis... or stories about the Vietnam War or Martin Luther King! Ask them about the historical context of the time period in which their event takes place. What was going on in the world or the United States at the time?
After your chat with the adult in your life, summarize the conversation and what you learned from their nonfiction account!
Your summary must at least be 8 sentences long. Read it over with the adult whom you had the discussion with in order to check your work for spelling, grammar, punctuation, run-on sentences etc.
If you'd like, you can research more about the event and include a link to an informative website on your post!
Your post is due no later than Friday at 5pm.
A major historical event in my mom’s life was 9|11, this was when the planes were high jacked and steered in to the twin tours and pentagon. At this time, George Bush was president and he dealt with terrorism going on around the world every day. As everyday citizens, we never thought the terrorists would attack the U.S.A and do such devastating damage. It was a wake up call to the people of the United States and an uncertainty of what the future would bring. Everybody came together with great patriotism and the war against terrorism had begun. It was the United States goal to capture Osama Bin Laden who was responsible for the attach of the world trade center. It took a long time, but eventually he was assassinated. This is what my mom thought of 9|11.
ReplyDelete"As everyday citizens, we never thought the terrorists would attack the U.S.A and do such devastating damage." You definitely have that right Juliana! It was so scary when 9/11 happened and many people did not feel safe. It certainly was "a wake up call to the people of the United States." Great post!
Delete"It was a wake up call to the people of the United States and an uncertainty of what the future would bring." That is so right. Everybody was scared about what was going to happen next!
Delete"Everybody came together with great patriotism and the war against terrorism had begun." This is truly amazing how just one horrific event brought everyone together.
DeleteWhen my mom was about my age, 12 years old, she witnessed a crash of a space shuttle, the Challenger. Her class was watching the Challenger on TV, while it went up in to space on January 28, 1986. Suddenly the space shuttle exploded! My mom and all of her classmates witnessed this in school, all wondering what was going on. There were 7 people on the shuttle, and every one of them died during this explosion. The spacecraft exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, off of the coast of Florida. The space shuttle wasn't supposed to lift off at low temperatures, and that is what caused the crash. It was a very emotional time for many adults and my mom and her classmates.
ReplyDelete“The spacecraft exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, off of the coast of Florida.” I was wondering why the space shuttle crashed and what happened and this answered it for me. I think because you said “The space shuttle wasn't supposed to lift off at low temperatures, and that is what caused the crash.”I really thought that your paragraph was very interesting and some thing different.
Delete"When my mom was my age, 12 years old, she witnessed a crash of a space shuttle, the Challenger." That probably was supposed to be an exciting time for her until everything turned bad. It must have been so sad for her and her friends especially since she was in school. I still can't believe the first teacher to ever go up into space died.
Delete"There were 7 people on the shuttle, and every one of them died during this explosion." Thats soo sad! Its terrible!
DeleteMy step dad's most memorable historical moment was the Norway attacks. It took place in July of 2011.A gun man dressed dressed in a home made police uniform gained access to an island of families, and picnicers. He open fired killing 69 people and wounding 110 55 of them seriously. It was the deadliest atttack in Norway since world war 2. A survey found that on average, one in four norwegians knew someone affected by the attacks. On August 24 2012 Anders Behring Breivik was convicted and scentenced 21 years in prison. But they can repeatedly extend it for five years as long he is considered a threat to society.
ReplyDelete"69 were killed, wounding 110, and 55 of them seriously". Wow! That's over 150 people who were there during the attacks. It sounds terrible and was terrible. Excellent job Chris.
DeleteYeah I saw that on the news that was a tragic event how someone could do that knowing they are causing so much pain and misery to innocent people. Excellent job Chris.
Delete21 years? That's all even with the possible extention times that's insane! People have been sentenced to life in prison for murdering 1 person and he killed 69 and he only got 21? :(
DeleteSo your Dad SAW the pentagon? That's insane! How did your Mom react to the thought of him maybe beng on one of those planes? I'm happy your Dad wasn't and that he's OK!
Deletewhen my dad was 11 years old he celebrated america's bicentennial which is where the whole country celebrates 200 years of existence. It was a pretty big deal and it sort of united the country as one. My dad remembers exactly where he was at the time, he was at a parade right here in Gloucester with his dad. From what he told me it sounded really fun and exciting!
ReplyDeleteA big event in history my mom remembers is 9/11. It was one of the worst events in U.S history. On September 11, 2001 terrorists took over two planes and flew them directly into the twin towers in New York City. Osama Bin Laden the guy behind all this was hunted down and killed by President Obama in 2012. What my mom remembers is waking up to watch the news and saw the live footage from the attack, she said it was horrifying. Another plane flew to the pentagon and hit it. The last plane which was believed to be heading for the white house was stopped by the passengers on the plane, but very sadly crashed before the passengers could land it. I hope that someday the U.S.A comes together and ends terrorism.
ReplyDelete"It was one of the worst events in US history. On September 11,2001 terrorists took over two planes"I agree it probably was one of the worst if not the worst!
Delete"The last plane which was believed to be heading for the white house was stopped by the passengers on the plane, but very sadly crashed before the passengers could land it."wow the passengers did a go thing but sadly they had crashed.
Delete"Terrorists took over two planes and flew them directly into the twin towers in New York City." Wow. My mom told me that they've been taking flight lessons by our pilots just for this moment. Although it was such a tragic moment, This country has never been closer.
DeleteThis is the worst thing that happened to america.
Delete"The last plane which was believed to be heading for the white house was stopped by the passengers on the plane, but very sadly crashed before the passengers could land it." those passengers where so brave. It's so sad they had to loose their lives
DeleteMy mom’s most memorial historic event that happened was 9-11 in 2001. It was sad because our friend Paul died that day. He was in an airplane that crashed into the world trade center. We knew Paul and his wife because they adopted a baby the same year I got adopted. Paul’s new son and I played together because we came from the same country. Our family visited New York City last year and went to the 9-11 memorial. We found Paul’s name out of over 3000 names that were on the memorial. The baby is now 12 like me and has a new dad. My mom says because 9-11 was so personal that it took us a while to understand the big picture of what was going on in the world.
ReplyDelete"He was in an airplane that crashed into the world trade center." That's so sad I'm really sorry that happened I can't believe that someone you were close to died that day. I hope that the kid is happy with his new dad. "We found Paul's name out of over 3,000 names that were on the memorial." It's devastating how many people died that day.
DeleteBaylee, this post really helps me understand how tragic 9/11 was. Just thinking about how much that family went through is very sad. I think it is really interesting that your mother knew someone from that terrible event.” Over 3000 names were on the memorial”, this shocked me because I had no idea that we lost that many people in that incident. “It took us a while to understand the big picture of what was going on in the world”, I totally agree with this line because I think It actually told us what the world is coming to and kind of woke us up more and realized that the world isn’t the same as before.
Delete" My mom’s most memorial historic event that happened was 9-11 in 2001. It was sad because our friend Paul died that day. He was in an airplane that crashed into the world trade center." Wow that's crazy I'm so sorry that happened , 9/11 was really bad and i cant believe that over 3,000 people died.
Delete" We found Paul's name out of over 3,000 names that were on the memorial". That is so sad, I cant believe that you were so close to Paul's son. I hope that he is very happy with his new dad. DeleteI'm so sorry to here that your family friend was in the 9-11 plain. I would have visited the memorial as well. It must have been a hard time for your family to hear about such a thing like that.
DeleteThis sounds really upsetting. I cant believe there were over 3000 names at the memorial. It must have been a devastation that you and your mom can never get over! Everyone you know must have been so upset.
DeleteMy dad had a six o'clock flight on September 11th 2001 from Boston's Logan Airport to Wahington D.C.'s Reagan National Airport, for a business trip. When he landed, a colleauge picked him up and they drove to the office. On their way there, they passed the Pentagon on their left, and were awe struck by its mere sight. As my dad got to the office his cell phone rang. It was his uncle, asking him if he was okay. My dad didn't know what he meant, and was unaware at what had happened in New York City. The Twin Towers had been hit by planes. Upon walking into the office he learned the Pentagon he had just passed 20 minutes prior, was also hit by a plane. At this point, the phone lines were not working properly because they were inundated with calls. As soon as a call could finally go through, he called his wife and mother. They were relieved and just wanted him to come home. In order for my dad to get home, he had to rent a car because the FAA (Federak Aviation Administration)had declared for national security all air travel be haulted. So my dad's plan was to stop for dinner with his colleague, to watch President Bush address the nation. The restaurant was packed and so loud he felt like he was at a nightclub. However, as soon as the President came on the television it was instant silence, he said nobody was talking, the waiters and waitresses were not moving, but after the President's speech the restaurant broke out in applause.
ReplyDelete"In order for my dad to get home, he had to rent a car because the FAA (Federak Aviation Administration)had declared for national security all air travel be haulted." I never knew what FAA meant and wow! I never heard a story like that that's crazy! I've heard about 9/11 but not that good.
Delete"On their way there, they passed the Pentagon on their left, and were awe struck by its mere sight." That must of been scary for your dad to be there while 9/11 was happening. His wife must of been really nervous for your dad every one must of bee really nervous I know I would be.
Delete"As soon as a call could finally go through, he called his wife and mother" WOW Linsey that must have been really scary for you and your family!! @ Lindsey P
DeleteNice details also pretty interesting
DeleteWow! that mush have been really scary for you, I'm glad he's okay
Delete"My dad didn't know what he meant, and was unaware at what had happened in New York City. The Twin Towers had been hit by planes. I happy everything is ok.
DeleteThat is amazing how he passed just 20 minutes before the plane hit the pentagon!I am happy to breathe a sigh of relief that he was okay.He must have been so worried.
DeleteWow if he was on the other plane he would be dead.
DeleteThat must be scary to him even though he already left the airport after he passed the pentagon. He would also dead if he had ben right by the pentagon
You must have been very worried. Hes lucky that he was on the plane that was not hijacked

Delete9/11, a horrible day in American history. Three attacks occurred that day. One attack in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, one on the Pentagon, and one on the Marriott World Trade Center. Two jet planes attacked The World Trade Center. One the North Tower, and one the south tower. The two identical towers were completely collapsed within hours. A total of a just over 3,000 people were killed that fatal day. September 11, 2001 was a horrible sad day to American history. All those lost that day will never be forgotten.
ReplyDeleteAbout 11 years ago when my dad was on his way to an appointment he was listening to sports radio w.e.e.i and as he was driving they were watching the updates it was happening and they were describing exactly what had happened. They were describing a plane that crashed into a building and burst into flames, and just as they were speculating what had happened such as the piolet lost control or the plane was flying too low ect. they started screaming and another plane flew into the other world trade center or twin tower and they speculations changed and they realized that this was no accident that something big was happening. It was scary for my dad because he was confused and he didnt know what was going on. When he got to his apoinment in boston and the person answered the door, they told my dad that they didnt want my dad to do the appointment because they were so overwhelmed and they rescheduled their appointment. So my dad went home and he felt that he couldn't get home fast enough as he pulled up into the drive way the mail man was there and his exact words to my dad were “ you are very lucky that you can be home with your family right now.” so my dad ran inside as quick as he could and hugged my mom who was pregnant with my little sister at the time and he hugged me and he sat down and watched the rest of what had happened on then news in awe.
ReplyDeleteI asked Ms. Dowmohowski said that at the time of 9/11 she was only twelve and didn't really know what was going no. she heard the teachers talking about two wooden planes that had crashed into the twin towers. One of her friends said her dad was on a plane to California, her friend did not know if her dad was ok, so she was dismissed. then every one in America joined together and raied al the American flags.
ReplyDeleteLindsey, that's pretty crazy! I'm glad that your dads okay! WOOOOOWWW....
ReplyDeleteWhen I was only a one year old, My dad was driving home while listening to the radio. When he heard that the first plane crashed, We all thought it was an accident, He rushed home. When he got home started watching the horrid event on T.V. When we saw the second one hit we knew it was no accident.
ReplyDeleteMy step dad, Jo, said that a major event in his life was 9/11. He was at work, where there are no TV's when it happened, but someone did have a radio. Jo, and all of his colleagues crowded around that person's desk, listening to what happened. They were all shocked, and scared, and they went home. When Jo got home he decided to walk around the neighborhood. He went to hi neighbor, Deirdre's house. She was really scared and freaked out, because her friend had been in the Twin Towers when it happened. Deirdre had just gotten off the phone with her friend, as he was walking into the elevator. She was really worried for him, and had no way of contacting him, or his family. After that Jo went around to other houses in the neighborhood. Everyone was trying to make sure their children didn't get too scared. All in all it was a very crazy, and scary experience for Jo.
ReplyDeleteI spoke to my parents and they remember 9/11. My dad was at work and my mom was at home with me. I was about 1 year old at the time. When the first plane hit, it was just an accident. But when the second one hit, America knew we where under attack. To watch the news or see it in real life, realizing that this wasn't a tv show, or a movie. These we real innocent people, losing their lives when they had so much more to live for.
ReplyDeleteMe and my dad talked about 9/11. He mentioned that our cousin Kevin McCarthy died in the tower on one of the hieghest levels and couldn't make it out in time. He was 40 years old and that's pretty young. I don't know if I really should have got to known him because it would have ben sadder. I actually met him at my uncles wedding when I was 2 years old so I don't remember him. My dads friend was also in the bottom of the building but once the plain hit he ran for his life and never stopped. I know him today and he is really nice and he is a salesman in New York with a nice family. My dad said it was a emotional and scary day and not knowing what's going to happen next. What was also sad is that Kevin called his whife and that's the last time any one heard from him again. My dad said not only USA security became better but the worlds security became better
My mothere and I talked about her grandfather's candy factory. When my mother was about 6 years old she went on a tour of her grandfather's factory. They had big vats of melted chocolate, marshmallow, and caramel! They also had big bins of nuts. They had assembly lines where they made different bite size chocolate candys with different fillings. Her grandfather told her that she could taste whatever she desired. My mother thought that it was amazing to see candy everywhere. She kept tasting and tasting. She would get spoons of anything. After that day my mother threw up. And she never liked candy again for the rest of her life.
